July 30, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- First baseman Wes Bankston, left fielder Justin Ruggiano, second baseman Elliot Johnson, designated hitter Jon Weber and shortstop Jorge Velandia each collected a double as Durham posted a 6-3 win over Indianapolis in front of 11,238 Monday night at Victory Field.
The Bulls improve to 59-50 overall and 30-25 on the road, while the Indians fall to 54-54 on the season and 31-25 at home. Tuesday will be the Tribe's 253rd consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
Durham jumped out of the gate with three runs when seven batters stepped to the plate in the opening frame. 3B Joel Guzman (2-for-5, 2 R) highlighted the inning with a two-run triple to right, while Bankston (1-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) roped an RBI double to right. CF Jason Pridie (2-for-5, 2 R), Weber (2-for-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Bankston all crossed the plate in the first.
Indianapolis narrowed the deficit by plating a run in the first and fourth. DH Adam Boeve (1-for-4, 1 R) led off the first with a base knock to left, stole second and scored on LF Michael Ryan's (1-for-3, 1 RBI) sacrifice fly to right. RF Yurendell de Caster (1-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI) started the fourth with a free pass and eventually scored on C Carlos Maldonado's (2-for-3, 1 R) single up the middle.
The Bulls added three runs to their advantage by scoring one in the fifth and two in the seventh. Ruggiano (3-for-5, 2 R) opened the fifth with a base knock to center, stole second and scored on Bankston's sacrifice fly to left. Weber then highlighted the seventh with a two-run double to center, scoring Pridie and Ruggiano.
De Caster led off the eighth by smacking his eighth roundtripper of the season -- a solo-shot to right -- which made it a 6-3 game.
Durham RHP Calvin Medlock (3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) improved to 3-1 with the win, while LHP Jeff Ridgway (2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 SO) notched his third save of the season. Bulls starter Jeff Niemann, who faced just one batter, exited the game as a precautionary measure for right-shoulder discomfort.
Tribe RHP Luis Munoz (5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) fell to 1-1 in his second Triple-A start of the campaign.
The teams wrap up the brief two-game series on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Bulls LHP J.P. Howell and Indians RHP Bryan Bullington are the probable starters for the affair.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
