TONIGHT'S GAME: Is the third of a four-game series and is the ninth of 12 games against Toledo in the 2007 regular season...The fifth of six at Fifth Third Field...The R-Braves are 3-5 against the Mud Hens...1-3 at Fifth Third Field...It is the ninth game against Toledo in July (the Braves and Hens face off 10 times in July - the most games vs. any one team in a any one month this season)....All eight games this season have been decided by three runs or less...The Braves are 390-330 all-time vs. the Mud Hens...It is the 35th of 48 games vs. West Division clubs...Richmond is 18-16 vs. the West, 11-11 away from The Diamond...The Braves lead the International League's South Division by three games over Durham.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Mud Hens beat the Braves 2-1 Sunday at Fifth Third Field. The Mud Hens smacked two home runs and held the Braves to a single run for the second straight day to earn their second straight win over the Braves. The Mud Hens grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a home run by Chris Shelton. Richmond tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Pete Orr. The Hens moved in front to stay in the sixth on a solo home run by Dane Sardinha. Victor Vasquez earned his 10th win, allowing three hits in six innings. Aquilino Lopez notched a save. Lance Cormier struck out six and did not walk a man in seven innings but took the loss. Orr and Doug Clark had two hits for the Braves. Shelton and Timo Perez had two hits for the Mud Hens.
REHAB RUMBLINGS: RHP Tanyon Sturtze joins the Braves today on a rehab assignment. He appeared in two games with Mississippi (0-2 21.60), four games in Rome (0-1 5.40), and two games with the GCL Braves (0-2 27.00). He had surgery for a rotator cuff injury last May. OF T.J. Bohn remains on the Disabled List but has started a rehab assignment with the GCL Braves. The Braves have made 87 roster moves this season. Sturtze will be the 51st player to play for Richmond this season. The Braves have six players on the DL.
ON THE LEADER BOARD: The Braves lead the IL in ERA (3.49), most shutouts (13), and fewest home runs allowed (65). Richmond is second in the league in stolen bases (108). The Braves lead the league in fielding percentage (.984) and fewest errors (60). Richmond leads the IL in percentage of runners thrown out stealing (59-133 .444). Martin Prado leads the league in hitting (.323). Gregor Blanco is fourth in runs scored (61). Corky Miller leads the IL in percentage of runners caught stealing (36-77 .468). The Braves have the top two hitters in the IL for the month of July (Doug Clark leads the league with a .408 July average. Prado is second at .397). Blaine Boyer leads the league in strikeouts in July with 30.
OF STREAKS AND MEN: Martin Prado has hits in nine straight games (12-38 .316). He has hits in 22 of his last 23 games. Pete Orr has a three game hitting streak (7-13 .538). Brent Lillibridge has hits in three straight games (5-11 .454).
PLAYOFF PREVIEW?: The South and West Division champions will meet in the first round of the Governors Cup playoffs. Right now that would be Richmond vs. Toledo (the Mud Hens enjoy a seven game lead in the West). As of today the other two playoff clubs would be Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (leading the North) and Buffalo (wild card). Richmond is a combined 10-12 vs. those clubs.
CRUNCHING NUMBERS: The Braves have not lost three straight games since dropping four straight June 28-July 1. The Braves 33-23 road record is the best in the IL. Following this series the Braves will play 22 of their last 34 games at home. The Braves have not had a sub- .500 road trip this season. They have lost just two of 13 road series this season.
