Norfolk Tides News Release
The Durham Bulls pounded out 14 hits, knocking off the Tides 7-4 Thursday afternoon from Harbor Park.
Wes Bankston and Justin Ruggiano led the Bulls' offensive attack, as the Bulls snapped Norfolk's six-game winning streak in the series. The Tides had won the previous six games against Durham dating back to last season.
The Tides mustered four hits off of four Durham pitchers, with Mike Cervenak and Jason Dubois collecting doubles on the afternoon. Eider Torres drove in the Tides' first run with a sacrifice fly.
Norfolk plated three runs in the bottom of the 6th inning on just one hit. J.R. House led off the inning with a walk, and moved to third on Cervenak's double off of Durham starter Jeff Niemann (2-1). After Jon Knott drew a walk, Shane Dohmann was brought in to face Terry Tiffee with the bases loaded. Tiffee hit a sharp ground ball to Dohmann who fired home for the force out of House, but catcher Raul Casanova threw wide of first base attempting to convert a double play, which allowed two runs to score and advanced Tiffee to third. Dohmann then uncorked a wild pitch on ball four to Luis Montanez, scoring Tiffee to bring the Tides within 5-4.
The Bulls extended their lead to 6-4 in the 7th on a solo home run by Elliot Johnson, and added another run in the 9th frame on a single by Chris Richard.
Tim Kester (1-2) took the loss for the Tides, allowing five runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings of work.
The Tides and Bulls will square off in the finale of their four-game set on Friday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m.
