
Braves Sweep Knights, Stretch Win Streak To Eight

Richmond, VA - The Richmond Braves swept a doubleheader from the Charlotte Knights Thursday at The Diamond, winning the opener 4-0 and taking the nightcap 5-4 in eight innings. The Braves pushed their winning streak to eight games, their longest since April of 2002.
In the opener, the Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI ground out by Yunel Escobar. Richmond tacked on two more in the third. Barbaro Canizares drew a bases-loaded walk and Corky Miller was hit by a pitch with the bags jammed. Wes Timmons capped the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth. Braves pitchers tossed their third straight shutout. Anthony Lerew worked six and two/thirds innings, allowing just two hits. Manny Acosta got the final out. Lerew earned the win and Charlie Haeger took the loss.
In the nightcap, the Braves again opened up a 4-0 lead. Carlos Mendez smashed a two-run homer in the second. Bill McCarthy added a two-run blast in the fourth. The Knights ended the Braves consecutive scoreless innings streak at 31 and two/thirds in the sixth on a two-run single by Andy Gonzalez. Charlotte forced extra-innings in the scheduled for seven innings contest with two more runs in the seventh on a two-out double by Pedro Lopez. The Braves won in the eighth on a walk-off single by Corky Miller. Mendez had two hits for the Braves. Trey Hodges pitched five shutout innings. Buddy Hernandez picked up the win. Brett Prinz took the loss.
The Braves and Knights wrap up their series Friday at 7 PM at The Diamond. Macay McBride is scheduled to pitch for the Braves against Heath Phillips.
