March 27, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies News Release
Atlantic City, NJ â Atlantic City scored three third-period goals in a span of 3:12 seconds to come from behind for a second consecutive night and defeat the Johnstown Chiefs 5-4 before 1393 at Historic Boardwalk Hall in ECHL action Sunday. The win lifts the Bullies into first place in the North Division, one point ahead of the idle Reading Royals.
Johnstown's (20-33-14) Joe Tallari struck for a pair of goals in the first period to lead off the scoring. Off a Bullies turnover, Tallari found the puck on his tape in the slot and ripped a shot through the pads of Bullies goaltender Trevor Koenig at 7:55 to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Tallari extended the lead to 2-0 when his shot from outside the right-wing circle deflected off Koenig's glove and trickled into the net at 15:25.
Atlantic City (38-21-8) responded 19 seconds into the second period with Johnstown on a four-minute power play. Derek Edwardson collected J-F Plourde's rebound in the slot and slapped the puck past Chiefs goaltender Mark Scally for a shorthanded goal to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Chiefs would eventually score on that power play at 3:16 to re-claim their two-goal advantage at 3-1 when Chris Leinweber was credited with a goal that saw the puck deflect off a Bullies stick at the right-wing circle and roll back into the slot and past goaltender Jeff Weber on in relief for Koenig. Johnstown extended their advantage to 4-1 after converting on a two-on-one rush as Matt Reid took a cross-ice feed from Brent Kelly at the right-wing circle and slipped the puck past an outstretched Weber at 10:25. Shawn Mather brought the Bullies back to within two goals when he collected his own rebound sitting in the crease and tipped the loose puck past Scally at 17:49 to make it a 4-2 game.
Plourde cut the deficit to 4-3 when he re-directed Mather's shot from the point past Scally at 9:37 of the third period. Mather then netted the equalizer himself 34 seconds after Plourde's goal when from behind the net, he shot the puck off of Scally's pads and into the cage at 10:11 to tie the score at 4-4. Brian Fahey gave the Bullies their first lead of the game on a power play goal when he beat a screened Scally with a blast from the left point at 12:49 for the eventual game-winning goal.
Atlantic City out-shot Johnstown 39-28. Weber stopped 19 shots to earn his first professional victory. The Bullies went 1-8 on the power play.
Atlantic City has outscored their opponents 10-1 in the third period in their last three games and out-shot them by a margin of 55-21.
