San Diego Hosts Gwinnett For First Time

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls look for their third straight home win and to keep their dying playoff hopes alive as they host the Gwinnett Gladiators for the first time at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena.

SERIES HISTORY: This is the first-ever meeting between the West Division Gulls and South Division Gladiators.

San Diego has played 12 games outside of its division this season, going 4-6-2. The Gulls are 2-2-1 again non-West Division teams at home. Gwinnett has played four games against the West Division, posting a 3-1-0 record. Tonight is the only regular season head-to-head match-up.

LAST GAME (MARCH 26 @ LONG BEACH ICE DOGS): The Ice Dogs scored two goals in an 18-second span late in the second period, then again 21-seconds apart early in the third en route to a 5-2 victory over the Gulls Saturday night at the Long Beach Arena. Joe Cardarelli led the way for Long Beach with two goals and an assist, while netminder Sebastien Centomo turned aside 27 of San Diego's 29 shots. Brian Gornick (1g, 1a) and Guillaume Fournier (2a) each had multipoint games for the Gulls.

GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (33-26-6) enter the day sixth in the West Division, 11 points behind the Idaho Steelheads for the fourth and final playoff spot... They are eight points back of the fifth-place Fresno Falcons... San Diego has one game in hand on both Idaho and Fresno... The Gulls' magic number to be eliminated from the postseason is four (The combination of points gained by Idaho and points lost for the Gulls totaling four)... The Falcons' magic number to eliminate San Diego is seven... The Gulls are 21-8-3 at home, but just 12-18-3 on the road this season... They have outscored their opponents 114-90 at home, but have been outscored 106-75 on the road... The Blue and Orange are 12-15-2 in their last 29 games... Since the all-star break, they are 7-4-1 at home and 5-10-1 on the road (12-14-2 overall)...

OTHER NOTES: San Diego is 23-3-1 when scoring four-plus goals in a game, but just 10-23-5 when scoring three or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponents seven times since the all-star break (28 games)... They are just 18 for 136 on the power play (13.2 percent) since the all-star break... Newcomer Brett Draney had his career-high eight-game point streak snapped last night in Long Beach. He had 15 points (7g, 8a) in that span – 14 of those points coming with the Steelheads...

GWINNETT UPDATE: Gwinnett (35-22-8) begins the day with 78 points, tied with the Mississippi Sea Wolves for third place in the South Division... The Gladiators also enter the day as the seventh seed in the American Conference. Mississippi, which holds the sixth seed, has the same amount of points but owns the tie-breaker with more wins... Gwinnett is only two points back of the fourth-seeded South Carolina Stingrays and two points behind the fifth-seeded Charlotte Checkers... The Gladiators clinched a playoff spot with last night's win in Bakersfield... They have won three of four so far on their five-game West-Division road trip, which concludes tonight... Kris Goodjohn is sixth in the ECHL with 67 points (20g, 47a). His 47 assists are tied for third in the league...

TRANSACTIONS: Wes Rypien was placed on the seven-day injured list Thursday with a groin injury. He joins Curtis Brown (groin) and Nick Ganga (knee), also out with injuries... Goaltender Mathieu Chouinard was released Wednesday... Aaron Forsythe and future considerations (two players to be named later) were acquired Tuesday from the Peoria Rivermen in exchange for Ian Forbes... Draney was acquired Tuesday from Idaho in exchange for Evgueni Nourislamov... Simon Lajeunesse was acquired Tuesday from the Dayton Bombers... Sylvain Deschatelets was traded Tuesday to the Bakersfield Condors in exchange for future considerations...
