IceGators Rally to Down Pride in OT
March 27, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA â The Louisiana IceGators scored the final four goals of the game on Sunday afternoon to come back and defeat the Pee Dee Pride 4-3 in overtime at the Cajundome.
Pee Dee is now 0-14-2 in its last 16 road games. The 16-game road winless streak is tied with the 1995-96 Johnstown Chiefs for the fourth-longest such streak in ECHL history.
The Pride drew first blood, taking a 1-0 lead just 2:37 into the opening period. Kyle Kidney won a face off back to Darryl Green at the blue line. Green took a harmless-looking shot from the right point that was deflected in front by Kidney, who picked up his 16th goal of the season.
Pee Dee doubled its lead at the 16:55 mark of the first period. Lee Jacobson found Noah Whyte skating with speed across the Louisiana line. Whyte used some great stickhandling to deke goaltender Nathan Marsters to the ice, and tucked a shot in on the near post for his third goal of the season and his second with the Pride.
Gregg Johnson gave the Pride a 3-0 lead with his team-leading 25th goal of the season 5:28 into the second period. Johnson made a nifty move at the blue line to get around an IceGators' defender, and skated into the left-wing circle. His quick wrist shot from just inside the circle beat Marsters to the five-hole.
Louisiana took advantage of a lucky bounce to get on the scoreboard at the 11:28 mark of the second period. Wes Mason dumped the puck in behind the Pride net, and the puck bounced hard right back in front of the net allowing Joe Dustin to sweep it into a wide-open net for his fourth goal of the season.
The IceGators pulled within one at the 8:49 mark of the final period. Alex Sawruk sent a pass to the front of the net, and Chris Thompson, stationed at the near post, was able to chip the puck over Boucher's shoulder for his 18th goal of the season.
Louisiana tied the game with a power-play goal at the 12:35 mark of the final period. Wes Mason won a draw for Thompson on the far boards, and he found Jake Ortmeyer at the center point. His shot through traffic eluded Boucher to the stick side for his fifth goal of the season.
In overtime, Jade Galbraith took a pass from Sawruk on the left wing side and beat Boucher with a quick wrist shot at the 1:37 mark to give Louisiana the win.
Pee Dee is back in action on Friday, traveling to Columbia for a 7:00 match-up with the Inferno. Catch all of the action on WDAR Sunny 105.5 and www.peedeepride.com starting with the Palmetto Chiropractic Pre-Game Show at 6:40.
