Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs earned their fourth consecutive victory Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center, topping the Texas Brahmas by a final score of 5-1 in front of nearly 4,600 fans. The win pulls Bossier-Shreveport into a tie with Texas for second place in the Berry Conference with the teams set to meet again tomorrow afternoon in North Richland Hills.
Andy Contois scored two goals for the Mudbugs, while David Rutherford scored on a penalty shot had and an assist. Shawn Limpright and Travis Clayton also chipped in two assists each as the âBugs took a 5-4-1 lead in the season series against Texas. Simon Mangos and Jeff Kyrzakos scored the other Mudbugs goals and John DeCaro (18-11-1 ) posted 17 saves to earn his 18th win of the year.
The Mudbugs outshot the Brahmas 8-7 in the first period and took a 1-0 lead at 11:45 when Shawn Limpright sent a pass across the slot to Simon Mangos, who beat Wayne Savage with a wrist shot low to the stick side to put the âBugs on top. Both teams were 0 for 1 on the powerplay as Bossier-Shreveport led after one.
Just as they did Friday night, the Mudbugs scored in the first 30 seconds of the second period as Andy Contois directed a David Rutherford pass into the net to put the âBugs up 2-0 just 26 seconds in. Texas cut the lead in half at 8:28 as Dylan Stanley pulled the puck to his backhand and tucked it in from the top of the crease.
Only 23 seconds later however, Limpright snuck a great back-door pass through three Brahmas and right to Jeff Kyrzakos, who slammed home his 17th goal of the year to make it 3-1. Less than two minutes after that, Contois was set up in the corner when he threw the puck into the slot where it deflected off a defenseman and past Savage to extend the lead to 4-1. Scott Reid replaced Savage a short time later and Bossier-Shreveport led by three heading into the third.
Just over seven minutes into the final period, Rutherford was pulled down from behind on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Rutherford placed the heel of his stick on top of the puck and stickhandled to the front before beating Reid with a top-shelf backhander to make it 5-1.
The game turned physical in the back end of the third, which featured three fights. First Brett Smith took on Tyler Allen at 11:19, then Dave Pszenyczny KO'd Mick Lawrence at 11:59 and finally Shawn Limpright grappled with Alex Curran four minutes later.
John DeCaro (18-11-1) surrendered just one goal as the âBugs outshot the Brahmas 21-18. Wayne Savage (20-13-3) made 13 saves before Scott Reid came in to stop three shots in the last 28 minutes of play. Bossier-Shreveport held Texas off the board on six powerplays for the visitors while going 0 for 3 on their own powerplay.
The Mudbugs will now begin a four-game road swing with another tilt against the Brahmas tomorrow afternoon from the NyTex Sports Centre. Opening faceoff is set for 4:00 with pregame coverage beginning at 3:45 pm on News Radio 710 AM KEEL. The game will also be shown live online on CHL-TV.
