LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Arizona Sundogs 4-1 Saturday night at Laredo Energy Arena. The Bucks win, coupled with Rio Grande Valley's win over Missouri, keeps Laredo two points back of the final playoff spot in the Berry Conference. The Bucks won their second straight game as they improve to 22-30-8 (52 points).
Keegan Dansereau scored two goals and Torrie Jung stopped 26 of 27 shots he faced to help the Bucks improve to 5-1 in their last six home games.
The Sundogs had their four-game winning streak snapped.
The Bucks scored first for the first time in five games as they took a 3-0 lead just 3:21 into the first period.
Laredo jumped out 1-0 just 1:12 into the first period when Dansereau scored from the right side of the crease off of a pass from Brian Matte on an odd-man rush. The goal was Dansereau's first of the night and fourth of the season.
The Bucks would go up 2-0 just 18 seconds later when Jeff Hazelwood scored on a rebound from the left circle to score his 16th of the season.
Dansereau put the Bucks up 3-0 at the 3:21 mark of the first when he stuffed in a rebound from the left side of the crease to net his second of the game and his fifth of the season.
Arizona (24-28-9) would cut the Laredo lead to 3-1 at the 5:44 mark of the first when Craig MacDonald scored from the slot on a power-play to net his fifth of the campaign.
Laredo outshot Arizona 16-12 in the first period.
The Bucks would increase their lead to 4-1 just 38 seconds into the second period when Daniel Koger scored a power-play goal from the bottom of the left circle. The strike was Koger's team-leading 27th of the season.
Laredo outshot Arizona 8-4 in the second period.
Neither team scored in the third period with the Bucks outshooting the Sundogs 12-11. Laredo outshot Arizona 37-27 in the game.
The two teams combined for 137 penalty minutes in the final 15 seconds of the game as several fights broke out at the same time.
Saturday night Terry Ruskowski tied Gary Unger for fifth place all-time in CHL history with 568 games coached. Ruskowski will pass Unger Wednesday in Colorado.
During the first intermission Saturday Chris Grenville was inducted as the first member of the Laredo Bucks hall of fame in a special ceremony. During the ceremony Grenville thanked the fans of Laredo, a Grenville tribute video was shown and his number 16 was hung in the rafters on a special banner. Grenville was also presented a plaque from Ed's Trophies to honor his accomplishments.
The Bucks start a four game road trip Wednesday night (Mar. 16th) in Colorado. Game time is 8:05pm.
