Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush (36-21-4) trumped the Fort Wayne Komets (27-25-6) 3-1 on Saturday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Goaltender Tim Boron turned aside 36 shots to push his record to 9-1-0 and give the Rush sole possession of first place in the Turner Conference. Brendon Hodge snapped a fourteen game goalless drought and collected his first game-winning goal of the season. The Rush now face the Colorado Eagles on Tuesday, March 15th at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Tickets are still available for that game.
Andrew Smale netted the opening tally of the game and his third goal of the season on a fluke play. The defenseman charged down the right wing side, cut to the high slot and slid a backhand shot on net that somehow fooled goaltender Nick Boucher and slid through his pads.
The Komets bounced back just over five minutes into the second period on a strong individual effort by Leo Thomas. Thomas received a pass from P.C. Drouin and while falling, sent a shot on net that was denied, but then poked the rebound home from his stomach for the 1-1 tie. At the 12:31 mark, Brendon Hodge ripped home a powerplay goal with a slapshot from the left point that gave the Rush a 2-1 lead. The goal was Hodge's first since February 4th and served as the eventual game-winner, his first of the season.
With just 1:04 left in regulation, Derek LeBlanc sent a turnaround shot from the right half wall that caromed off of the post and in to give the Rush a 3-1 victory.
With the win, the Rush now regain sol-possession of first place in the Turner Conference.
