Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (24-30-6) defeated the Missouri Mavericks (32-20-6) in a tight 2-1 game. The Bees received goals from Brett Clouthier and Zak McClellan while Jerad Kaufmann made 37 saves in net.
With the victory the Bees remain two points ahead of the Laredo Bucks for the final Berry Conference playoff spot.
The Killer Bees scored the first goal of the game at 5:09 as Brett Clouthier netted his second of the season. Clouthier picked up a pass from Brett Wilson on his way into the zone and took a slap shot from the top of the circle that handcuffed Mavericks goalie Robby Nolan and hit the back of the net.
The Mavericks were close to scoring at the end of the first period while on the power-play. After Jerad Kaufmann made the initial save on a shot from the slot the puck was trickling towards the goal line but a diving Kirk Medernach kept the puck from crossing the goal line preserving the Bees lead into the locker room.
The Bees extended their lead to two goals as Zak McClellan netted his 22nd of the season while on a two-on-one with Tomas Klempa. Klempa received a pass from Darcy Campbell as the Bees played on the power-play. Klempa fed the puck across the ice to McClellan who was able to beat Nolan glove side after Klempa sold shot down the ice. The goal came at 5:38 of the second period.
Jerad Kaufmann continued his heroics in the second period turning away an additional eight shots, giving him 26 saves through the two periods.
The third period was marred by an injury to referee Dan Dreger. Dreger took an apparent puck to the face and had to leave the game with 17:19 remaining in the third period. The two linesmen, Chris Petrin and Jon Shaw continued to officiate the game after the delay.
Missouri scored their first goal of the game at 8:59 of the third period as Cole Ruwe slapped a shot from inside the circles that beat Kaufmann who was screened.
The Ruwe goal would be the only strike of the night for the Mavericks as Jerad Kaufmann kept the doors closed throughout the final minutes despite the fact that Missouri skated with the extra attacker.
Kaufmann finished the evening making 37 saves on 38 shots faced.
The Killer Bees return to action this Thursday hosting the Odessa Jackalopes before returning to the road next weekend. Thursday's game is underway at 7 p.m. and tickets are available by calling 843-PUCK (7825) or visit killerbeehockey.com.
