Birmingham Magicians News Release

Birmingham, AL.... Birmingham Magicians, owner, Reggie McDaniel, announced today that former NBA, University of Alabama, ALL-SEC and All American basketball player, Buck Johnson, has been agreed to a deal with the Birmingham Magicians of the ABA.

Johnson who starred for the Houston Rockets in the NBA, played one game for the Birmingham Magicians as the 13th man celebrity player in an earlier game this season against the Atlanta Vision in Birmingham. Johnson, a Birmingham native, who now resides in Huntsville, will join the Magicians for their next game against Tim Hardaway and the Florida Pit Bulls to be played at the Dothan Civic Center, January 26th at 7 p.m. according to team officials.

Head coach, Jim Farmer a one-time teammate of Johnson at Alabama said he is excited to have Buck Johnson play for the Magicians. "Buck brings us a lot of intangibles and experience that we are lacking right now" Farmer said. "Buck also wants me to play again, but I haven't made that decision yet." Buck Johnson was very instrumental in helping the Magicians defeat the Atlanta Vision earlier this season, scoring 13 points and playing over 20 minutes. Johnson says he's not sure if this will be a long term commitment. "I am going to play this week and make an evaluation from there," Johnson said.

The game this Thursday in Dothan will mark the first ever official professional basketball game played in Dothan. The Magicians are looking to erase their current losing streak against the 2nd ranked Florida Pit Bulls, who are in first place in the Marvin Barnes/Moses Malone ABA division. Birmingham is currently third among the four team division despite its recent slide. The Birmingham team returns to Birmingham to face the Pit Bulls again, Friday night, at Jefferson State Community College. Game time is 7 p.m. at the northeast Birmingham campus.
