Buccaneers lose to Capitols
March 19, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Captain Patrick Grasso had a 5 point night but it wasn't enough as the Madison Capitols scored two power play goals, one late in the 3rd to force overtime and then once in the extra session, and came away with the 6-5 overtime victory.
A nice two on one developed for the Madison Capitols and Guillaume Leclerc finished off the feed from Dmitri Buinitsky at the 5:06 mark of the first period. The Buccaneers had a MidAmerican Energy power play go by the wayside as 1:11 into the 2 minute minor they were called for a penalty themselves. However the Buccaneers killed off the penalty and capitalized on the momentum, scoring moments later as Patrick Grasso took the puck in with Nick Wolff and while Wolff didn't get on the scoreboard on Grasso's unassisted goal, he certainly was a contributing factor in the Des Moines captain beating goaltender Drew Hotte. Just a few minutes later Buccaneer threw a puck on net from above the right circle that Hotte played with his blocker but it took a Des Moines bounce and trickled between Hotte's pads for a 2-1 Des Moines lead. Madison would tie the game before the end of the period with Alec Broetzman burying a loose puck out front of Buccaneers' goaltender Nick MacNab to tie it at 2 17:51 into the game. Both teams would not only score 2 goals in the first period but would match each other in shots on goal as well with 13.
The Buccaneers got off to a fast start in the 2nd period as Isaac Johnson picked up a goal in his first USHL game from just inside the right circle at the 3:04 point of the period which would chase Hotte from the game. Patrick Grasso would double his team's lead with a long pass from Ty Pelton-Byce sprung Grasso behind the D and he beat replacement goalie Daniel Lebedeff 5-hole at the 6:09 mark of the period. Madison would not go away quietly though and sustained pressure would pay off as the got a goal from Eugene Fadyeyev at 10:49 of the second period. Despite being outscored, Madison outshot Des Moines in the second period by a 13-11 margin.
Just 37 seconds into the 3rd period a defensive miscue behind Madison's goal line and Zach Jordan fed a backhanded pass through the slot to Patrick Grasso who scored his hat trick goal and fifth point of the evening to give Des Moines the 5-3 lead. Just 50 seconds later Madison would respond with Billy Jerry's unassisted goal to cut the lead at 5-4, where the score would remain until late in the game when Madison, with a power play and their goal pulled, scored a 6 on 4 goal with 1:28 left in regulation to force overtime. Des Moines would be called for too many men on the ice in the extra session setting up a 4 on 3 advantage for Madison and the Capitols would finish the game off as Marcel Godbout got the overtime winner.
Up next for the Buccaneers is a road contest against the Tri-City Storm on Friday, March 25th, with a puck drop slated for 7:30 PM.
