Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Geneva, IL---In a game the Stampede needed to have, the Herd rolled past the Chicago Steel 4-1 Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The Herd rallied from a 1-0 first period deficit to improve to 26-24-4 and moved back into a tie with Fargo for the fourth and final playoff spot with six games left in the regular season. Jack Becker scored twice while Stefanos Lekkas put together another outstanding performance in goal stopping 45 shots in goal for his 20th win of the year.
The Stampede were looking to improve their play from the previous night in Plymouth, MI and they did in the first, but still found themselves down 1-0 when Marc Johnstone scored 11:16 into the game. With a delayed penalty coming up on the Herd, Johnstone picked up a loose rebound in front of the Stampede net and wristed a shot past the extended glove of Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas. That would be the only goal of the period and Chicago took a 1-0 lead into the locker room with both team finishing with 14 shots each.
In the second, the Steel put plenty of pressure on the Herd but Lekkas, playing in front of family and friends, was outstanding between the pipes, stopping all 16 shots faced. The Stampede tied the game 11:29 into the period when Jack Becker took a pass from Josh Passolt and raced into the right circle where he wristed a shot past the glove of Chicago goaltender Daniel Vladar to make it a 1-1 game. Minutes later the Herd were on the power play and Becker struck again, this time Parker Tuomie took the puck down the right wing wall and sent a perfect pass across the slot to Becker who tipped the puck past the right pad of Vladar to give the Herd a 2-1 edge. Chicago pushed late in the period with a 5-on-3 advantage, but the Stampede held off the Chicago attack and took that lead into the locker room, despite being outshot 16-8 in the period.
Sioux Falls wasted little time padding their lead just 1:33 into the period when Tuomie found Alex Stevens who skated just inside the right circle and wristed a shot that clanked off the right goalpost and into the back of the net to give Sioux Falls a 3-1 advantage. The Stampede put the game away for good at 8:51 of the period when Dainel Warpecha fed the puck to Csanad Erdely who split the Chicago defense and raced through the slot and blasted a shot past Vladar to make it a 4-1 game. The Steel pulled their goaltender with three minutes left in regulation, but the Stampede played solid defense and kept Chicago off the board to earn the big 4-1 win.
Chicago outshot the Herd 16-6 in the period and 46-28 on the night, but were held scoreless on the powerplay, going 0-for-5 while the Stampede went 1-for-4.
The Stampede will now get some must needed rest and won't play again until Saturday, March 26th when they travel to Sioux City to face the Musketeers at 7:05 PM. Fans can catch all the action live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com.
