Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Elburn native Stefanos Lekkas stopped 45 of 46 shots to lead the visiting Sioux Falls Stampede (26-24-3-1, 56 points) to a 4-1 road victory Saturday over the Chicago Steel (21-23-4-3, 49 points) at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
Chicago managed the only goal in a busy first period of play. With a delayed call coming against the Stampede, Steel defenseman Matt Kiersted fed the puck to the top of the crease. Marc Johnstone was there waiting, and after being denied once by Lekkas, Johnstone was able to jam a rebound past the Sioux Falls netminder for his fourth goal of the season. The Steel carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Sioux Falls center Jack Becker evened things up in the second period, wristing a shot past Steel goaltender Daniel Vladar at 11:29. Just over three minutes later, Becker was able to beat his fellow Boston Bruins prospect Vladar with a tip in front for a power play goal. Chicago doubled Sioux Falls in shots, 16-8, in the second period, but found itself in a 2-1 hole headed into the third period.
Sioux Falls extended the lead just 93 seconds into the third period. Alex Stevens rushed a shot from the top of the right circle through traffic and past Vladar's blocker. Later in the period, Csanad Erdely raced in all-alone and beat Vladar on the stick side to secure a 4-1 win for the defending Clark Cup Champions.
Chicago's 46 shots on goal were a season high and more than double the number of shots (19) it registered in Friday's 4-1 loss to Waterloo.
Chicago hits the road Tuesday for a 7:05 p.m. contest at Waterloo before returning to Fox Valley Ice Arena for another weekend homestand. On Friday, March 25th, the Steel host the Green Bay Gamblers on Men of Steel: Superhero Night. The 7:30 p.m. contest is a Steel Family Pack game, where fans can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas (or waters) and four chuck-a-pucks starting at just $59. The following night, the Steel celebrate Chicago hockey with Chicago Blackhawks Night against the Lincoln Stars. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will feature appearances from Daniel Carcillo, Tommy Hawk, the Bud Light Ice Crew and Jim Cornelison. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 855-51-STEEL, stop by the Box Office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena or visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
