Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Dubuque Fighting Saints overcame a two-goal deficit by scoring five consecutive goals Saturday to upend the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-2 at Mystique Ice Center.
Waterloo notched the only goal during the first period shortly after a power play had ended. Jake Ryczek handled the puck at the left point and waited for traffic to congregate near the goal mouth, finding Ryan Lohin near the side of the net. When Ryczek's pass made it across the slot, Lohin stuffed in a chance at 5:21.
Lohin was the trailer on a three-on-two rush and struck again at 6:47 of the second. Sam McCormick feathered a pass his way, and Lohin snapped it between the pipes. However, a Dubuque comeback began with a breakaway goal by Gordie Green at 14:55. Exactly four minutes later, the Saints tied it during a power play when Spenser Young snapped a chance from the slot into the net.
Dubuque took control with two goals in 11 seconds during the mid-third. Mitchell Smith capped a rush by stuffing a centering feed from Willie Knierim into the net. Off the ensuing restart, Nate Sucese swiped a pass, stepped into the zone, and lifted a shot to the top corner at 8:53. With 11.2 seconds to go, Petter Makitalo slipped in an empty-netter to seal the outcome.
The Hawks seek to get back on the winning track Tuesday against the Chicago Steel. The game at Young Arena in Waterloo begins at 7:05.
