BRIDGEPORT, CT -- Brad Marchand scored the clinching goal as the Providence Bruins won a shootout, 3-2, to earn a 2-1 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Wednesday night at Arena at Harbor Yard. Greg Mauldin scored the Sound Tigers goal while Mikko Lehotenen netted the Bruins regulation goal.
Providence out-shot Bridgeport 34-25. Both goaltenders were busy, as Nathan Lawson made 32 saves for the Sound Tigers while Danny Sabourin stopped 24 shots for the Bruins.
"There was a stretch of five or six minutes where we didn't play the way we wanted to, but overall I thought it was a good hockey game," Sound Tigers head coach Jack Capuano said. "It was a good test for our team."
Mauldin put the Sound Tigers on the board early on, scoring his team leading ninth goal of the year 3:45 into the game. Mauldin picked up a pass from Jesse Joensuu along the left boards and drove to the net, sliding the puck around Danny Sabourin's right leg, just inside the goalpost.
The second period was scoreless, but both teams had opportunities. Alain Goulet hit the post on a shot from the point during a Bruins power-play midway through the period. Late in the frame, Sabourin denied Bridgeport's Tony Romano on a breakaway attempt.
Lehotenen tied the game for Providence 1:17 into the third period. Lehtonen took a pass from Matt Marquadt and snapped a shot over Lawson's left shoulder for his ninth goal of the season.
With six minutes remaining in regulation and the Sound Tigers on the power-play, Mark Wotton rang a shot off the post from the slot. As the final seconds ticked away, Lawson made an outstanding glove save on a breakaway by Jeff LoVecchio.
Lehtonen opened the shootout with a goal, putting the puck through Lawson's legs, to give the Bruins the early advantage. Zach Hamill sent a shot under Lawson's glove to make it 2-0 Bruins.
Greg Moore put the Sound Tigers on the board in the second round, lifting a backhander into the top of the goal. Justin DiBenedetto evened the shootout in the fourth round, sliding a shot around Sabourin's left side following a deke move.
Marchand scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the fifth round, going five hole on Lawson. Sabourin made a stick save on Tyler Haskins' final attempt to seal the victory for the Bruins.
The Sound Tigers are back in action Friday night when they visit the Lowell Devils at 7:00 pm. The Sound Tigers will host the Springfield Falcons on Saturday at 7:00 pm at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The game will feature the return of goaltender Rick DiPietro to the Sound Tigers. DiPietro began his career in Bridgeport, leading the team to the Calder Cup Finals in 2002.
