Swift Current Broncos News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (7-22-1-2) ended a nine-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win over the Medicine Hat Tigers (22-10-1-1) Friday night.
Tyler Smithies opened the scoring 3:58 into the game after Matthew Benson held the puck in at the Tigers blue line. Benson swung it across the zone to Cole Nagy, playing his first game as a Bronco, but his two shots were blocked.
Aiden Bulych had the third opportunity before Smithies was able to get the fourth chance past the blocker of Mads Søgaard to open the scoring.
The lead didn't last long as Ryan Chyzowski picked off Kasper Puutio's pass in the Broncos zone and ripped a one timer past Isaac Poulter to even the game just 2:09 later.
Swift Current wasted no time getting their lead back, as Smithies and Bulych came in on a two-on-one rush just seconds later, and Smithies fed the puck to Bulych who tapped it into an open net for his seventh of the season just 21 seconds after the Tigers tied the game.
Smithies and Bulych connected again 3:20 later, this time with Smithies centring to the slot for Bulych to fire a one timer past Søgaard to put the Broncos ahead 3-1 heading into the first intermission.
Just 30 seconds into the second Medicine Hat pulled within one when Chyzowski deflected Cole Sillinger's one timer under the glove of Poulter.
The score remained 3-2 Swift Current heading into the third, but Ethan Regnier had a breakaway to try and push the Broncos lead to two heading into the break, but he was denied by Søgaard in the final minute.
In the third, the Broncos ran into penalty trouble but were able to keep Medicine Hat's top-ranked power play at bay on the first two chances. The third one came back to bite them.
After a faceoff win in the Broncos zone, Dylan Plouffe's shot from the left point bounced off Hendrik De Klerk and into the net with just 19 seconds left on the clock, sending the game to overtime.
Both teams had glorious chances to win, including a breakaway for Nagy and Poulter robbing Cole Clayton with the glove as he came down the middle in the Broncos zone.
In the shootout, Regnier opened the scoring on the first shot before Chyzowski tied it in round two. After the Tigers had three straight opportunities to win the game, Sergei Alkhimov gave the Broncos the lead in round six.
Jonathan Brinkman needed to score to keep the game alive, but the puck rolled off his stick as he cut to the net and Broncos took the game 4-3.
The Broncos now get set to head to Lethbridge to take on the Hurricanes (21-10-0-5) Saturday night.
