Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB - The Medicine Hat Tigers came back from a 3-1 deficit to force extra time but fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Swift Current Broncos.

The Broncos scored three goals in the first period of the game to take an early 3-1 lead. Ryan Chyzowski scored a pair of goals, one in the first period and one in the second, before veteran defenceman Dylan Plouffe scored his first goal as a Tiger on the power play with 19 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. While both teams had their opportunities in overtime, neither could score and the game went to six rounds of a shootout before Sergei Alkhimov scored the game winning goal for Swift Current to snap their nine game losing streak.

In the first period, Broncos veteran forward Tyler Smithies collected a rebound and scored the opening goal of the game.

While the Tigers were pressuring the Broncos in Swift Current's end, the puck was turned over to Ryan Chyzowski who one timed it under the glove of Broncos netminder Isaac Poulter to bring the game back to a stalemate and score his first of the night.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, 21 seconds after Chyzowski's first goal, Aiden Bulych scored his first of the night to regain the lead for the home team before adding another one just over three minutes later. The Tabbies trailed 3-1 at the end of the first period.

Early in the second stanza, Nick Perna dished the puck out to Cole Sillinger who fired the puck towards the net and Chyzowski was there to redirect it in for his second goal of the game and his 18th of the season.

Late in the period, Broncos captain Ethan Regnier had a breakaway but goaltender Mads Søgaard stood tall to keep the Tigers within one.

With 19 seconds left to play in regulation while the Tigers were on the power play, Plouffe snapped a wrist shot on net to score his sixth goal of the season and force overtime. James Hamblin assisted on the play.

Neither team was able to score in overtime and the game was decided in a six round shootout when Alkhimov scored the game winner. Søgaard stopped four of six shooters in the shootout and 19 of 22 shots faced while Poulter turned aside five of six shooters and 40 of the Tigers' 43 shots.

The Orange and Black are 22-10-1-1 and they will return home to host the 16-10-4-1 Calgary Hitmen Saturday night for the first of three consecutive meetings between Medicine Hat and Calgary. After Saturday's contest, the Tigers will travel to Calgary on New Year's Day for an afternoon tilt before returning home Friday, January 3rd to host the Hitmen. Tickets are still available for this Saturday's game and can be purchased in person at the Canalta Centre Box Office or online.
