Americans Hold on for Overtime Point, Fall to Winterhawks in OT

The Americans returned from Christmas break today to take on the Portland Winterhawks at the Toyota Center. For the first time in three games this season, the Americans picked up a point against the Winterhawks.

Luke Zazula opened scoring tonight with a highlight reel goal, scored on the power play assisted by Sasha Mutala and Connor Bouchard at 10:19 first period.

The Americans held their one goal lead into the first period. Seth Jarvis tied the game for Portland 3:50 into the second frame. Nick Bowman took back the lead for Tri-City ten minutes later with his first shorthanded goal, assisted by Zazula.

Portland went 0/5 on the power play tonight and Tri-City 1/7.

Reece Newkirk scored the final tying goal for Portland at 11:00 third period to send the game to overtime.

Tri-City was out shot 37-28 tonight. Beck Warm played the full game in net for the Americans. He leads all Western Hockey League goaltenders with 912 saves this season.

Cross Hanas was the overtime hero tonight for Portland fans with a breakaway goal to steal the victory.
