Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (July 15, 2008) - The Brockton Rox scored four times in the first four innings and led 4-1 before the Worcester Tornadoes rallied for four runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 5-4 comeback win at Hanover Insurance Park.
Brockton appeared to be in total control after erasing an early 1-0 deficit. Rox 3B Phillip Cuadrado homered for the second consecutive night to tie the game at 1-1 in the second inning. C Lee Rubin followed with a solo shot of his own, his first since August 2007, in the third inning to put the Rox in front 2-1. With LHP Rolando Viera controlling the Worcester offense, the Rox scored once in the fourth and again in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1 and chase undefeated Tornadoes' starter LHP Tom Cochran from the game after just six innings.
Viera was cruising through the sixth, having stuck out a season-high eight batters while scattering four hits. Seeking his team-record 22nd career victory in a Rox uniform, Viera hit a wall in the seventh and the league's leading offense could not be held back. Worcester scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning capped by 1B Chris Colabello's two-run home run to jump in front 5-4 and send Viera to the showers.
The Rox were unable to rally against the Worcester bullpen after the devastating missed opportunity. Instead of the record-setting win, Viera was saddled with his sixth loss of the year. Cochran took a no-decision for the first time in 11 appearances in 2008. Worcester RHP Chandler Barnard picked up the win, his first as a professional and RHP Eddie Pena picked up his second save of the season. Rox relievers RHP Matt Zachary and RHP Jerry Dunn combined to finish the seventh and eighth innings.
The two teams finish the three-game series on Wednesday night in Worcester as Rox RHP Wayne Lundgren faces Worcester RHP Matt Weagle at 7:05 PM.
