New Jersey Jackals News Release
Atlantic City, NJ - New Jersey Jackals RF Marcos Rodriguez went 4-4 with an RBI, but the Atlantic City Surf came away with a 5-4 victory on Tuesday night at Bernie Robbins Stadium. In the bottom of the second inning, the Surf used two infield singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs against Jackals starter Tom Atlee. Atlee then induced 3B Gil Zayas to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, but a run crossed the plate as Atlantic City took a 1-0 lead.
That score held until the top of the fifth inning when New Jersey RF Marcos Rodriguez laced a one-out single and SS Casey Gordon drew a two-out walk before CF Zack Smithlin poked a two-run double down the right field line to give the Jackals a 2-1 advantage. In the top of the sixth, the Jackals loaded the bases with no outs for LF Craig Maddox, who drove in New Jersey's third run of the game on a groundout to first base to put the Jackals on top 3-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Surf evened the score at 3-3 on an RBI triple by RF Josh Burrus and a run-scoring groundout off the bat of C William Plaza. In the bottom of the seventh, Atlantic City took a 4-3 lead on a Joe Burke RBI triple off Jackals reliever Hunter Davis.
The Jackals countered in the top of the eighth inning when Rodriguez collected his fourth hit of the game, a run-scoring single that plated C Matt Lauderdale to even the score at 4-4. In the bottom of the eighth, Davis hit Burrus with a pitch to put him aboard to lead off the inning 1B Eddie Kim followed with a single to put runners on first and third. With Plaza up and no outs, the Jackals played the infield back and Plaza hit into a double play, but Burrus scored the go-ahead run as Atlantic City took the lead at 5-4. In the top of the ninth, Atlantic City reliever Walker Whitley sent the Jackals down in order to seal the victory and earn his sixth save of the year as the Surf made it two straight wins to begin the second half of the season.
Atlee and Huguet both pitched well as each allowed three runs in six innings of work, but neither starter factored in the decision. Surf reliever Kyle George (4-1) earned the win despite allowing a run in one inning. For the Jackals, Davis (2-4) took the loss after surrendering two runs in two innings out of the bullpen. The Jackals and Surf return to action tomorrow morning at 11:05 a.m. when they conclude their three-game series at Bernie Robbins Stadium. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning at 11:00 a.m.
