Ottawa Voyageurs News Release
(OTTAWA, ON) Monday, July 15, 2008 - The Ottawa Rapidz missed a good chance to win their first series of the season losing 12-7 against the Quebec City Capitales who scored five times in the 10th inning to take home the win.
The Rapidz scored the first run of the night in the first inning. Jabe Bergeron continued from where he left off the previous night, hitting an RBI single to score Jose de los Santos who singled to get aboard.
The Capitales took the lead in the third inning, scoring three runs on five hits against Fraser Robinson with one error by the Rapidz. All nine batters for Quebec had an at-bat in the inning. They added three more runs in the following inning, this time sending eight batters to the plate, with most of the damage done by Pat Scalabrini's two-run single.
The Rapidz came back from behind in the sixth, scoring four times against Ãrick Nadon pitching in relief for Luis Valdez. Ottawa sent 10 batters to the plate, recording five hits and Quebec made one error to make it a 6-5 game. The Rapidz took the lead for the second time in the game during the following inning. Greg Dumouchel produced his first RBI as a Rapid, singling to right field to score the runs.
The Capitales came back to tie the game at seven in the ninth on Patrick D'Aoust's sacrifice fly scoring Alex Nunez from third. They completed the comeback exploding for five runs in the 10th to make the game out of reach for the Rapidz.
Both starters did not make it through the sixth inning and were not involved in the decision. Robinson worked for 5.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on 13 hits and one walk as well as striking out a season-high nine batters. Valdez gave up one earned run on three hits, as many walks and struck out three Rapidz in five innings. Jose Guanchez (1-4) got the loss pitching in the ninth and the tenth and allowing five earned runs. Ivan Blanco (2-3) earned the win pitching two scoreless innings before Jason Schutt ended the game with a perfect 10th.
The Rapidz announced after the game that they have released rookie right-handed pitcher Daniel Desclouds. Desclouds was originally brought in as a preventative measure as a right-hander out of the bullpen. Jose Salas, was also released post-game, failed to meet expectations, hitting .226 in 32 games for the Rapidz, with only four extra-base hits.
After an off-day on Wednesday the Rapidz hit the road for a 4-game series in Nashua against the Pride. The first game is scheduled for Thursday, July 17 at 7:05pm. Adam Hawes (2-6, 5.47 ERA) will start for the Rapidz. His opponent has yet to be determined.
