BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Mike Halmo netted the only goal for Bridgeport and Parker Milner stopped 24 shots, but the Bridgeport Sound Tigers fell to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 4-1 on Sunday night at Webster Bank Arena.
Phantoms goalie Jason LaBarbera stopped 42 of 43 shots he faced, making the difference in the game and named the number one star.
After two early power play chances in the first period and outshooting the Phantoms 11-3, the Phantoms struck first on a power play of their own with Kevin Czuczman in the box for cross checking. Milner was able to hold onto the initial shot from the right point by Sam Gagner, but after the puck came loose in front of the net, Taylor Leier was able to lift it over Milner's shoulder to give the Phantoms the 1-0 lead.
Chris Conner was awarded a penalty shot at 13:06 of the first period after bring tripped up on a breakaway. Conner skated in close to the crease and fed a backhander through the five-hole of Milner to bring the Phantoms lead to 2-0.
The Sound Tigers started the second period on the power play and were able to up their shot advantage 18-9. The goal scoring opportunities kept on coming for Bridgeport early in the second period adding ten shots on goal before the halfway point of the period.
Bridgeport got themselves on the scoreboard with 4:13 remaining in the second period on their fourth power play of the night. Burroughs dumped the puck into the zone on one knee at the blue line where it landed at the feet of Halmo who chipped it home to cut the Phantoms lead to 2-1.
The Phantoms regained their two goal lead just as their third power play of the night expired early in the third period. Nick Cousins skated behind the net with the puck and passed it to Conner who brought it up the left corner of the boards. Conner crossed the puck over to Danick Martel who shot it just passed the blocker of Milner.
Thirty seconds following their third goal, the Phantoms brought their lead up to 4-1 with a goal from Kevin Goumas. The forward took the puck all alone into the zone skating down the right boards and beat Czuczman who was the lone defender in front. Goumas fired a shot that went bar down behind Milner.
The rest of the third period proved uneventful and the score remained 4-1 in advantage of the Phantoms.
Despite outshooting Lehigh Valley for the entirety of the game, the Sound Tigers fell in their sixth straight game. They were 1-for-4 on the power play while the Phantoms were 1-for-3.
The Sound Tigers face the St. John's IceCaps Wednesday night at Webster Bank Arena looking for a win. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
