Springfield Falcons News Release
Hershey, PA - The Springfield Falcons lost another lead in the third period but fought back to win 3-2 in overtime against the Hershey Bears on Sunday night at the Giant Center.
The Bears controlled the early stages of the game and scored at 6:39 with a goal from Dustin Gazley. His ninth of the year was shot from the corner and deflected off the skate of Falcons' goaltender Niklas Treutle. Chris Brown and Caleb Herbert assisted on the goal. Greg Carey tied the game just 39 seconds later by intercepting a pass at center ice. He bolted into the offensive zone and scored his thirteenth of the year with a hard wrist shot over the glove of Justin Peters.
Springfield took a 2-1 lead with a power play goal from Alex Grant at 7:24 of the second period. His eighth of the year was scored with a slap shot from the blueline. Dustin Jeffrey and Craig Cunningham assisted on the goal to register the only tally in the second frame.
Travis Boyd scored his seventh of the year on a rebound to tie the game at 12:18 of the third period. Paul Carey and Erik Burgdoerfer assisted on the goal to tie the game at two and force overtime. Just 41 seconds into overtime, Jeffrey scored the game winning goal for his eleventh of the year. The forward began the play with a pass to Philip Samuelsson who came directly from the bench on a line change. Samuelsson held onto the puck until there was a clear shooting lane. The rebound was left for the game winning goal to give the Falcons a 3-2 victory. Treutle made 29 saves to improve his record to 8-10-2. Peters made 22 saves to fall to 9-6-4.
The Falcons remain on the road with a contest at the Dunkin Donuts Center next Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Providence Bruins. The teams will meet again at the MassMutual Center at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday to complete the home-and-home series.
