Bridgeport Islanders News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Sound Tigers made a late push, but it wasn't enough as the Syracuse Crunch won 4-3 on Friday night at the OnCenter War Memorial Arena.
Special teams were the deciding factor in the game, as the Crunch went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Bridgeport went 0-for-5.
The Crunch took just 2:41 to get on the board. After the Sound Tigers were caught with too many men on the ice, the Crunch took advantage on the power play as Mike Angelidis banged home a rebound to make it 1-0 Syracuse. Carter Ashton and Yanni Gourde got the assists on Angelidis' 19 th goal of the year.
Syracuse controlled play for much of the first period, but the Sound Tigers found a way to break through with less than five minutes to go in the opening frame. Scott Mayfield walked the blue line and fired a shot that Alan Quine redirected home to tie the game at 1-1. Much like the Angelidis goal, it was also Quine's 19 th goal of the season.
The Crunch got their lead right back in the second period. With three minutes gone in the middle stanza, Syracuse crashed the net hard and the puck squirted out for a rebound opportunity. Ryan Martindale was there to roof the shot and make it a 2-1 game.
Another penalty against the Sound Tigers proved costly, as Syracuse's power play was lethal on the night. Joey Mormina fed Jake Dotchin on the left point and the defenseman blasted the one-timer past Poulin to make it 3-1. Dotchin's sixth goal of the season was his fourth goal on the power play this year.
The Sound Tigers came out hard in the third period, getting the majority of the scoring chances. Carson McMillan nearly scored, but Gudlevskis made a brilliant save to keep the Crunch up 3-1. However, just seconds later, Dustin Jeffrey snuck one through the Syracuse netminder, making it a one-goal game.
Bridgeport had nearly all the momentum midway through the final frame, but the Crunch took advantage of one of their lone chances. Joel Vermin tucked a shot past Poulin on a 3-on-2 to make it at 4-2 game. The goal ended up being the game-winner, assisted by former Sound Tiger Justin Courtnall.
Carson McMillan got the Sound Tigers within one again with two and a half minutes left in the game. McMillan banged home the rebound of a Johan Sundstrom shot, netting his third goal of the season.
Bridgeport had plenty of chances to tie the game late, but Gudlevskis shut the door. Ryan Pulock nearly tied the game with only a minute left, but the puck somehow stayed out.
The Sound Tigers outshot the Crunch 41-39 for the game and 19-7 in the third period. Poulin made 35 saves in a losing effort.
The Sound Tigers stay in upstate New York, as they face off against the Binghamton Senators tomorrow night. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
Notes: Scott Mayfield and Syracuse's Carter Ashton were given game misconducts for starting a second altercation...Dustin Jeffrey now has nine points in his last four games...The game saw a total of 82 penalty minutes and three fights.
