Cleveland Monsters News Release
Stefan Elliott scored two power play goals and Calvin Pickard had 31 saves to lead the Lake Erie Monsters (29-26-6-4) to a 3-2 road win over the Charlotte Checkers (28-34-5-1) at Time Warner Cable Arena Friday night. Michael Schumacher also scored for the Monsters, while Andrew Agozzino's two assists extended his point streak to 10 games, tying a franchise record. The Monsters visit Charlotte Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to conclude their three-game road swing.
Stefan Elliott opened the scoring for the Monsters at 14:32 of the first period, seven seconds into a Monsters power play, when he ripped a wrist shot from the center of the blue line through traffic and past Charlotte goalie Drew MacIntyre. Andrew Agozzino and Ben Street assisted on Elliott's 16th goal of the season. Agozzino's assist extended his point streak to 10 games, tying the Monsters franchise record.
Brock McGinn scored the only goal of the second period, tying the game 1-1 for the Checkers at 5:28 of the middle frame. Justin Shugg made a move at the right point and flipped a pass to McGinn in the right circle, and McGinn sent a wrist shot over the shoulder of Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard.
Elliott gave the Monsters a 2-1 lead with a power play goal in the third period at the 4:28 mark; his 17th goal of the season. Elliott sent a pass to the front of the net that deflected off a Charlotte defender and past MacIntyre. Agozzino and Street assisted on Elliott's team-leading 11th power play goal of the season.
Under a minute later at the 5:09 mark, Michael Schumacher fired home a one-timer following a pass in the high slot from Street to give the Monsters a 3-1 lead. The goal was the 10th of the season for Schumacher, and was also assisted by Duncan Siemens.
With 2:57 left and the Charlotte goalie pulled, Phil DiGiusseppe scored to pull the Checkers to within 3-2, but Charlotte was unable to tie the game. Charlotte had a goal disallowed in the final minute that would have tied the game, but the Monsters held their 3-2 lead for the duration.
Pickard stopped 31 of 33 shots for the win in net for the Monsters; he is 17-14-7 on the season. MacIntyre stopped 27 of 30 shots for Charlotte and is now 19-23-4 on the campaign.
The Monsters visit Charlotte Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's game airs live on 99X.
