Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons stumbled to the Worcester Sharks, 6-3, tonight at the MassMutual Center.
Captain Ryan Craig notched his 91st career goal, taking over the Falcons' franchise lead. Sonny Milano and Steve Weinstein both earned their first professional point in their first professional game tonight, registering one assist each.
The Falcons now hold 34-26-7-0 record with 75 points as they head into the final nine games of the regular season. Despite the loss, the team still has a 3-2-0-0 lead in the six-game season series with the Sharks.
Falcons goaltender Scott Munroe stopped 31-of-36 shots in defeat, while his Sharks counterpart, Aaron Dell, turned aside 34-of-37. Springfield notched their first power-play goal in the last 47 attempts tonight, going one-for-one on the man-advantage. The penalty kill unit shut down one-of-two Worcester power-plays.
After an action packed opening period, the Falcons entered the first intermission trailing, 3-2. Luke Adam opened scoring just 4:43 into the frame. Milano shook free of a Sharks defender in the corner and threw back a pass for Adam to one-time from the slot. Dana Tyrell picked up a point on secondary assist.
Under two minutes later, the Falcons went up by two. T.J. Tynan dug a pass from the corner out to Hubert Labrie at the right point. Craig redirected Labrie's shot to light the lamp for the 14th time this season.
The Sharks rallied to put up three goals in 2:38 and take control of the contest. Eriah Hayes kicked-off Worcester's scoring 8:55 into the period with the help of Matt Tennyson and Matt Taormina. Just after the halfway mark of the first twenty, Tennyson took a slap shot from the point that was stopped by Munroe, but left out for Daniel Ciampini to clean up.
Worcester took over the lead with 8:27 remaining in the first. John McCarthy skated past Falcons defenders and beat Munroe off an assist from Hayes.
The Sharks went up by two while on the man-advantage with 2:36 remaining in the middle frame. Taylor Fedun powered a shot from the right point. Evan Trupp got a stick on it and redirected it in. Taormina recorded a multi-point game with the secondary helper.
The Falcons notched a power-play goal to come within one at the 8:22 mark of the final period. Weinstein fired the puck from the point that was tipped by Craig. Dell made the save, but Sean Collins got a stick on it and threw it across the goal line.
However, Matt Willows ripped an unassisted shot from the blue line four minutes later to take back a two-goal Worcester lead.
The Sharks sealed a 6-3 victory with an empty net goal by Hayes with six seconds left on the clock.
The Falcons host the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday, March 28 at 7 p.m. before hitting the road to rematch the Sharks on Sunday, March 29 at 3 p.m.
