Brampton Steelheads News Release

The Steelheads played their second home game of the weekend, hosting the Kitchener Rangers for the first time this season. The Trout sought to end their six-game losing skid.

The Rangers had a chance right off the hop, started by a turnover at the Mississauga blue line, but Jacob Brennan was there to make the pad save. The Trout were forced to the penalty kill seven minutes in. The four-man unit was strong - Jared Walsh and Josh Burnside blocked shots left and right - and Mississauga was able to kill off the chance. Everett Clark had a couple of chances at goal in the first, but Jake Paterson also came to play today. With five to go in the frame, the Steelheads headed to the power play. The Trout couldn't make their way through the Rangers penalty kill, and as Ryan MacInnis exited the box, he was sprung on a breakaway. Nick Zottl broke up the play, but took a slashing penalty. In the dying seconds of the first, Jimmy Lodge gained entry to the offensive zone. He fed Sean Day who found Clark in front of the net who almost snuck it by Paterson. The scoreless period ended with the Steelheads trailing 16-7 in shots.

Early in the second period, the Steelheads were awarded another power play, but couldn't muster many chances. The man advantage was extended as the Rangers took another penalty before the first expired. The Trout couldn't break the seal on the special teams. The Rangers would make the Steelheads pay on a power play of their own. Gustaf Franzen snapped a one-timer down low to beat Brennan. Other than the goal, Brennan was extremely sharp in the game, making 32 saves in the first two periods.

On the penalty kill early in the final frame, Brennan made a couple of crucial saves on the goal line as the Rangers had multiple whacks at it. The Steelheads penalty kill was perfect after allowing the goal in the second. Josh Burnside took the puck up the wing and around the Kitchener goal. He centred for Cianfrone who beat Paterson up top to tie the game. The Steelheads got some life back after the goal. A too many men call left Mississauga a man short, but they killed off the chance. Following the PK the Trout had a great shift, holding possession in the offensive zone for over a minute. Rewarded for their effort, Clark broke the tie on a one-timer in the slot from Lodge and Day. Paterson was pulled with just under two minutes to go, but the Steelheads held on for the 2-1 victory to end their slump.

Cianfrone and Clark scored their second goals in as many days, and Brennan led the Steelheads with a 47-save performance, earning first star honours in the game.
