Braves Take Series from Suns, 8-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mississippi Braves center fielder Matt Lipka was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a two-run home run to help his team to a series victory with an 8-2 rubber-match win over the Jacksonville Suns in front of 1,759 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Monday night.

Lipka led off the game with a double to left-center field against Suns right-hander Ivan Pineyro (0-1). Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson followed with an RBI single to center field for a 1-0 Mississippi lead. The Braves (10-15) added two runs in the second inning, as pitcher Brandon Barker drew a leadoff walk against Pineyro, and Lipka hit a double that bounced on the left-center-field warning track and over the fence to put runners at second and third bases. Swanson's groundout scored Barker, and third baseman Carlos Franco added an RBI single to make it 3-0. Lipka's fifth-inning home run to left field extended the lead to 4-0. Pineyro allowed the first four earned runs in five innings with one walk and one strikeout.

Barker (3-0) faced the minimum number of Suns batters in the first three innings before hitting center fielder Yefri Perez to begin the fourth inning. Perez stole second base, and a subsequent walk and hit batter loaded the bases, before Barker struck out catcher Francisco Arcia to end the inning - the final time Jacksonville (11-14) had the tying run at least at the plate. The Suns scored in the fifth inning, however, when third baseman Avery Romero tripled to right field, and second baseman Peter Mooney drove his first home run since June 29, 2013, over the right-field fence to bring the Suns within 4-2.

The Braves fortified their lead with a four-run sixth inning against right-hander Chris Mazza, making his Double-A debut. Franco hit a leadoff single, first baseman Matt Kennelly hit a two-run home run, and RBI singles by second baseman Johan Camargo and Lipka made it 8-2. Suns right-hander Hunter Adkins worked two scoreless innings, and left-hander Jose Jose pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Following Barker, the Braves relievers combined for four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Right-handers Jason Hursh (one inning), Danny Burawa (two innings) and Bradley Roney (one inning) combined to finish the game.

UP NEXT: The Suns open a series in Jackson, Tennessee, at 8:05 p.m. Eastern Time Wednesday, when Suns right-hander Jake Esch (4-1) is scheduled to face Generals right-hander Dylan Unsworth (1-0). The Suns return home to begin a 10-game homestand Saturday, May 14, at 6:05 p.m. against Montgomery. On Mother's Day Makeup Night and Giveaway Saturday, gates open at 5 p.m. for an Apron Giveaway for the first 1,000 fans to the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
