Braves Slap RiverDogs, 7-3, Win Third Straight Game

CHARLESTON, SC - Shortstop Chad Lundahl went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in leading the Rome Braves to a 7-3 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of 5,505 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, the Braves have won three straight over the RiverDogs and improve to 25-23 in the second half and 47-70 on the season. Charleston slips to 22-24 since the All-Star break and 67-49 overall.

Rome got the scoring started in the third inning, when David Berres doubled to left and scored on Freddie Freeman's RBI single to capture a quick 1-0 lead.

The visitors extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth, when Chris Anderson singled and scored on Lundahl's two-run home run to left center.

The Braves put another run on the board in the sixth when Adam Coe doubled off RiverDogs reliever Stephen Artz, advanced to third on Chris Anderson's single to right and scored on Lundahl's third RBI of the game, a hard single through the left side.

The RiverDogs started a comeback in the sixth, when Bradley Suttle tripled off Rome starter Yeliar Castro (4-6) to lead off the frame. Castro was eventually replaced by Benino Pruneda, and Austin Romine greeted him with an RBI single to plate Suttle.

Romine advanced to second on a balk and crossed the plate on Brandon Laird's RBI single. Carmen Angelini then smoked the second triple of the inning to right field to score Laird for a 4-3 tally.

Rome retaliated in the seventh with three more runs off Artz to erase what the RiverDogs put across the inning before. Cole Miles opened the frame with a walk, Jason Heyward singled, and Freeman plated Miles with a RBI single. Coe reached on a fielder's choice that scored Heyward, and Chris Anderson doubled home the inning's third run.

Castro, in going 5.1 innings, allowed only one run on four hits and fanned five of the seven that the Braves' pitchers notched. Tommy Palica collected his sixth save of the season as he pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing no runs or hits and while striking out one and walking one.

Noel Castillo (7-6) pitched 5.0 stanzas for Charleston and allowed three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six. Artz tossed 3.0 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, while Jonathan Ortiz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning and fanned one of the three batters he faced.

Rome collected 13 hits on the night with Lundahl and Anderson sporting three each, while Heyward and Freeman notched two apiece.

Charleston was limited to seven hits with Angelini having the only multi-hit effort going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The final contest of this four-game set is slated for Saturday at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston sending righty Lance Pendleton (7-7, 3.44 ERA) to the mound, while Rome is expected to start righty Erik Cordier (1-0, 3.29 ERA).
