Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Eastlake, OH- After dropping a heartbreaker and falling behind 3-0 early in game two, the Shorebirds rebounded with nine unanswered runs to split the quasi-doubleheader on Friday at Classic Park.

In the resumption of Thursday's game, the Captains overcame deficits of 6-0 and 7-6 to win 8-7 in ten innings. After a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Nash tied the game in the ninth, Mark Thompson's sacrifice fly in the tenth plated Ron Rivas from third base on a bang-bang play at the plate. Matt Angle's throw from center-field appeared perfect, but Wally Crancer's applied tag was a moment too late and the Captains garnered the dramatic come-from-behind victory.

Leading 4-0 in the bottom of the 2nd on Thursday night, the Shorebirds were forced to leave the field when a strong thunderstorm passed through. The game was restarted on Friday at 4:08 PM. Sean Gleason began the day on the hill in place of Zach Britton. After a few smooth innings, Gleason surrendered one run in the sixth and five more in the seventh and received a no decision for the day.

After Lake County tied the game at six, the Shorebirds immediately responded in the top of the eighth. Pedro Florimon's two out single put Delmarva back on top 7-6, but the Captains rallied to tie in the 9th and win in the 10th.

Delmarva hit back-to-back homers in the top of the first inning, as Matt Angle and Ryan Adams went deep off Chris Archer to begin the game. In the second inning, a two-out triple by Adams scored two more runs for the Shorebirds.

In game two, the Captains stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off John Mariotti, who was making his first start since April 26. Mariotti allowed three runs on four hits before leaving after just a third of an inning, apparently re-aggravating his nagging groin injury. Andrew Schindling took over and, in just his second appearance as a Shorebird, was phenomenal for four and two-thirds innings, holding the Captains scoreless through the fifth inning.

Meanwhile, the Shorebirds bats went awakened in the second inning of game two. Tyler Henson hit the first of two homers in the nightcap, a three-run bomb in the second to tie the game at three. An inning later, the Shorebirds scored four runs on five singles to break away to a 7-3 lead. In the seventh, Henson launched his second homer of the evening, a two-run bomb that sent the Birds away with a 9-3 victory. Henson drove in five runs in six-run triumph. Joe Nowicki and Kieron Pope each finished game two with three hits as Delmarva totaled 14 base knocks as a team, all coming in a six inning span after a 1-2-3 first.
