Lexington Legends News Release
Michael Mitchell drove in three runs for the Asheville tourists including one on a game-winning triple in the ninth inning to give Asheville a 4-3 win over the Lexington Legends in game two of a four-game series.
Warren Schaeffer walked to lead off the top of the ninth inning for Asheville to start the game-winning rally. Everth Cabrera moved Schaeffer to second on a sacrifice bunt before Lexington closer Jay Pacella came into the game in relief of Fernando Abad. Michael Mitchell then greeted Pacella with his third RBI of the game, a triple to center field that scored the eventual winning run.
Asheville started the scoring with one run in the third inning. Kevin Clark walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on Warren Schaeffer's single to center field. Beau Seabury moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt to third, and Michael Mitchell drove Clark home with an infield single to third. Lexington third baseman Kyle Miller fumbled the slow-rolling ball while charging toward home, allowing the run to score.
Lexington quickly answered the Asheville run with two of their own in the bottom of the third inning. Brandon Barnes doubled with one out in the inning on a ground ball that shortstop Warren Schaeffer deflected into the right-center gap. Craig Corrado drove Barnes home with a double off the left field wall and then stole third base. Cat Everett brought Corrado home with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The starting pitchers settled down after the third inning, holding each team scoreless until the seventh. Warren Schaffer led the Asheville half of the second inning off with a single down the left field wall. Seabury moved Schaeffer to second on his second sacrifice bunt of the afternoon. Fernando Abad then relieved Jake Leonhardt for Lexington and promptly surrendered a single to Everth Cabrera, moving Schaffer to third. Cabrera stole second, and Abad balked home Schaffer. Michael Mitchell then drove the second run of the inning home for the Tourists on a bunt single down the first base line.
The Legends once again wasted no time responding to the Asheville run as they tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. The first two batters of the inning struck out for Lexington, but Craig Corrado started the rally with a walk. Corrado garnered three pickoff throws from Craig Baker, the third of which escaped first baseman Bo Bowman allowing Corrado to move to second. The Legends' second baseman moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a single from Cat Everett.
Craig Baker earned the win for Asheville with one and one-third scoreless innings of relief. Fernando Abad took the loss for Lexington after surrendering one run in two and one-third innings of work. Randall Taylor earned the save for Asheville with a scoreless ninth inning.
