Hickory Crawdads News Release
The Hickory Crawdads continued their second half struggles as they lost their second straight game to the West Virginia Power 4-2 at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, WV. Hickory has now lost nine of their past ten games and their sixth straight road game. The loss dropped the Crawdads second half record to a league worst 15-32, while West Virginia improved to a league best 32-15 in the second half.
Once again, the Crawdads' offense was the culprit in the defeat as they managed only three hits on the night. One of the hits was a two run homer by Jordy Mercer, accounting for the Hickory offense output on the night. After Mercer's home run, West Virginia pitching combined to retire 16 hitters in a row until Tom Hagan reached base in the 9th on a walk. Hagan was erased on a double play to end the game.
R.J. Seidel pitched the first three innings for West Virginia, allowing both Hickory runs as well as all three Crawdad hits for the night. Reed Dickert (2-2) pitched four perfect innings, striking out four, to pick up the win for the Power. Corey Frerichs picked up his tenth save of the season as he threw the final two shutout innings, walking only the one hitter in the ninth and striking out two.
Hickory starter Rodolfo Aguirre pitched well as he allowed only three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, but it was not enough as he took the loss making his record 0-3.
West Virginia opened the scoring in the second, as Aguirre surrendered a pair of solo home runs in the second inning to Caleb Gindl and Curt Rindal hit back-to-back shots, the eighth of the season for both hitters.
After Mercer tied the score in the third, the game remained even until the sixth inning when the Power scored with the benefit of a two-out hit. Gindl hit a run scoring triple to score Eric Fryer, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
West Virginia added a run in the eighth as Steffan Wilson walked to lead off the inning. Wilson moved to third on Gindl's fourth hit of the night, this one a single to right, and scored on a single by Rindal.
The two teams return to action in Charleston on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Mike Janela provides the play-by play on 92.1 FM WMNC and www.hickorycrawdads.com.
