Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS - On a star-studded night at Trustmark Park, the M-Braves returned to action with a 6-2 win over the Huntsville Stars. Cleveland Cavaliers star and Jackson native Mo Williams, Atlanta Falcons star and Jackson native Jerious Norwood and Mississippi State head football coach Dan Mullen were among the 5,427 fans that saw the M-Braves score more than four runs for only the fifth time this month. Freddie Freeman went 2-3 with a double and two RBI in the win.
The M-Braves got it going in the bottom of the second. Freddie Freeman doubled and scored when Eric Campbell hit into a double play. They blew the game open with a four-run third inning. With the bases loaded, Jason Heyward shot a single to right that plated Travis Jones and Matt Young. Kody Kirkland came in to score when right fielder Vinny Rottino misplayed the single. Heyward then scored on a single by Freeman to give the M-Braves a 5-0 lead.
The M-Braves executed the get'em on, get'em over, get'em in philosophy to a T in the fifth. Kirkland singled, moved to third on a single by Heyward and scored on a sac-fly by Freeman to push the lead to 6-0.
Huntsville got on the board in the seventh. Rottino singled and scored on a single by former Braves' farmhand Adam Stern and Chuckie Caufield reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Michael Garciaparra. After seven, the M-Braves led 6-2.
Edgar Osuna got the start for the M-Braves and tossed five scoreless innings. Deunte Heath gave up two runs in two innings and Tim Gustafson threw two scoreless innings.
In a rehab start, Dave Bush gave up five runs on six hits through three innings. Josh Wahpehpah allowed two runs in two innings and Bobby Bramhall threw two shutout innings.
The Braves and Stars face off in game two of this five-game series Thursday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. The M-Braves will go with righty Ryne Reynoso while the Stars will counter with right-hander Mike Jones.
The M-Braves will celebrate Christmas in July on Thursday night. The M-Braves will wear special Christmas jerseys and the ballpark will be full of Christmas cheer. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game as a part of the M-Braves Shirt off our Backs promotion.
