MOBILE, Ala. - Down by a run in the bottom of the eighth, the BayBears turned to one of their many All-Stars as Ricardo Sosa smacked a two-run double with two outs to bring the BayBears back over the Birmingham Barons 3-2 on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Sosa's big blast came off starting pitcher Charlie Shirek (3-3) as he was left on the hill to finish what he started but his first delivery to Sosa would be the one that hung him with the defeat in a complete game effort.

Shirek only walked two in the contest, but the second free pass came to start the eighth as Mark Hallberg reached. With one away, Pedro Ciriaco bunted for a base hit and both men advanced on a passed ball by Jared Price. Bryan Byrne popped out to leave both men in scoring position with two outs before Sosa's heroics.

Birmingham (60-30, 12-9) grabbed their 2-1 advantage in the fifth when Jordan Danks cracked his fifth home run of the season off Wes Roemer. Roemer also allowed a run in the fourth as the Barons tied the score at 1-1 with a two-out, RBI single from C.J. Retherford. Aside from that, Roemer was strong as he lasted through seven frames while scattering six hits and fanning six.

Kyler Newby (2-0) replaced Roemer in the eighth and tossed a perfect inning as did Daniel Stange (S, 9) in the ninth.

The BayBears (48-42, 11-9) were first to score in the ballgame as three singles plated a run in the third. Pete Clifford started with a knock and took third base on Evan Frey's base hit. Ciriaco looped a ball down the right field line that fell in to bring home Clifford.

The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They battle the Barons in game two of their series on Thursday night at 7:05 with Cody Evans (3-9, 5.48) getting the start. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
