Trenton Thunder News Release
(TRENTON, NJ) The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced today that Eastern League MVP Candidate Brandon Laird has been promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and that infielder
Corban Joseph will join Trenton from Single A Tampa. Laird currently leads the Eastern League in RBI (90), total bases (214) and at bats (409), is second in home runs (23), hits (119), games (107), tied for second in extra base hits (47), is fourth in runs scored (73) and fifth in slugging percentage (.523). His .291 batting average is 15th best in the league. The EL All-Star has driven in seven runs in a game twice this season and on May 26 against Erie, Laird became the second player in franchise history to hit for the cycle. Laird completed the cycle with a walk-off home run. Laird was batting .457 (16-for-35) with 3 HR, 7 RBI and 7 runs in his last 10 games. His 90 RBI are just 13 shy of the Thunder franchise record of 103, set by Raul Gonzalez in 1999.
Joseph, a 21-year-old infielder, is ranked as the 13th best prospect in the organization by Baseball America. He batted .302 with six home runs and 52 RBI in 98 games this season at Class A Tampa, playing most of his games at second base. In 2009, he batted .300 with four home runs and 57 RBI at Class A Charleson. He was a fourth round draft choice of the Yankees in 2008.
The Thunder start a three game series at Reading on Tuesday night. All the action can be heard live on 107.7 FM or online at www.trentonthunder.com.
