Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Center fielder Jordan Henry is the recipient of this week's Akron Aeros Player of the Week Award after posting his best stretch in Double-A. The 22-year-old leadoff man ignited the Aeros during the week of July 27th to August 1st as the team played six games at home against the Bowie Baysox and Reading Phillies. This is Henry's first Player of the Week honor and he was promoted from Class A Kinston in June.
Henry collected a .571 (12-for-21) batting average to lead the entire Eastern League this week, extending his hitting streak to eight straight games. He also collected two walks in the games Monday, Thursday and Friday nights at Canal Park while scoring eight runs total, including one in every single game. He also tied a team-high this year with two doubles in Tuesday's victory against Bowie and had a triple Saturday, nearly doubling his previous four total extra-base hits in all of his first 33 Double-A games this season.
In 39 total contests for Akron, he is now batting .293 with 22 walks, 22 runs scored and a team-leading eight stolen bases. He earned the promotion from Kinston the day after his birthday, June 13th, and led the K-Tribe for the first half of the year. Upon his first-ever promotion to Double-A, Henry ranked fourth in the Carolina League with a .333 batting average, was tied for fourth with 30 walks and ranked sixth with 14 stolen bases.
The Cleveland Indians selected Henry in the seventh round of the June 2009 Draft out of the University of Mississippi where he was a teammate of the team's 2010 first-round pick, left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz. Last year in his professional debut, he batted .286 in 67 games played for short-season Class A Mahoning Valley while becoming a New York-Penn League All-Star and leading the circuit with a .408 on-base percentage.
The Akron Aeros will award their Player of the Week honor to an individual player every Monday for the rest of the season. In the case of a Monday closure of the team offices, the Aeros will announce the award Tuesday. Akron starting pitcher Alex White won the award last week, becoming the second two-time honoree along with second baseman Jason Kipnis. This week, the separate Eastern League Player-Pitcher of the Week Awards went to Binghamton's Zach Lutz and New Hampshire's B.J. LaMura, respectively.
The Aeros are enjoying an off day Monday before resuming action Tuesday against the first-place Altoona Curve. A doubleheader begins the crucial four-game series, and the two teams will play a pair of seven innings games starting Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark. Alex White (6-4, 1.49 ERA) and Paolo Espino (9-4, 4.00 ERA) will throw for Akron against Altoona starters Justin Wilson (8-6, 3.06 ERA) and Jared Hughes (11-7, 4.62 ERA). Tuesday's radio broadcast begins at 5:15 p.m. on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
