Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Bowie Baysox got out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings against the Altoona Curve, and despite their best efforts, the Curve were unable to bridge the gap and make their second consecutive comeback as they fell 7-3 on Monday night at Blair County Ballpark .
The Baysox got out to a four-run advantage in the game's first inning off Curve starter Jeff Locke (2-5) as they sent nine men to the plate. Xavier Avery led the game off with a double before being advanced to third base on a bunt single by Greg Miclat. After a nice play by Miles Durham to cut Avery down at the plate, the Baysox got RBI hits from Caleb Joseph, Pedro Florimon and L.J. Hoes to take a 4-0 lead.
Bowie also tacked on a run in the second to run its advantage to, 5-0, but Altoona would answer in the last of the second with the first of its three runs on the night. Kris Watts scored on an error by the first baseman Billy Rowell as he missed a throw from shortstop Florimon on a base hit by Eric Fryer. Brock Holt followed with an RBI single to bring in Miles Durham and Altoona was within three at, 5-2.
The Curve's final run of the game came in the fourth as Fryer again brought home Watts to cut the lead to, 5-3.
After allowing five runs in the first two innings, Locke settled down and ended his outing with three scoreless. All told, Locke allowed five runs, all earned, on six hits and three walks.
Bowie starter Zach Clark (5-2) crossed the 100-pitch mark in his outing as he worked two outs into the seventh. He allowed eight hits and three runs and was lifted in favor of two of the league's most effective relief pitchers. Cole McCurry, who had allowed one earned run in 25.1 IP entering his outing ended a threat in the seventh and worked a clean eighth.
The Baysox added two more runs to their lead in the ninth off Matt McSwain as Robbie Widlansky hit a two run double to make it 7-3. The runs were charged to Anthony Claggett, who pitched three scoreless innings of relief before being lifted with two on and one down in the ninth.
In the Curve half of the ninth, McCurry couldn't finish off the game as he allowed a walk to Holt and a double to Starling Marte before Jose Diaz came on to earn his league-leading 13th save, stranding the runners on base with a strikeout and a fly out.
The Curve (22-21) and Baysox (22-22) will play their second of four at Blair County Ballpark at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. For the Curve, they'll send RHP Jared Hughes (3-1, 3.90) to the hill and he will be opposed by RHP Wynn Pelzer (1-4, 3.38).
Tuesday night's game will feature special discounts for Curve fans as it's a Two-for-Tuesday presented by Atlantic Broadband and KRAFT Singles. Fans can receive two-for-one offers on tickets, hot dogs and small popcorns for the contest with the Baysox.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. with gates to Blair County Ballpark opening at 5:30 p.m. Great seats for the ballgame are still available by calling the Curve at 877.99.CURVE or by visiting the official website of the Curve www.AltoonaCurve.com.
