
Carreno Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week

Manchester, N.H.- New Hampshire Fisher Cats starting pitcher Joel Carreno has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 16 - May 22.
The 24-year old started two games for the Fisher Cats last week and had a record of 2-0 with 0.73 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched. Carreno made his first appearance of the week on Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium and allowed one run on two hits and five walks while striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings of work in a 7-1 win against Binghamton.
In his second appearance of the week on Sunday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at New Britain the 6'0", 190 lb. hurler pitched six shutout innings in New Hampshire's 4-0 victory. He struck out seven batters and walked five while surrendering just one hit.
The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (15) last week, was tied for first in wins (2) and ranked fifth in batting average against (.079). On the season he is currently ranked third in the league in strikeouts (53) and fifth in batting average against (.198). Joel, who has allowed two hits or less in each of his last four starts for the Fisher Cats, was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as a non-drafted free agent on October 11, 2004.
The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium to open a four-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats on Friday, May 27, at 7:05pm. Friday night's game will be followed by a spectacular Atlas Fireworks show and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free Fisher Cats T-shirt, courtesy of Dead River Company.
