Eastern League Announces Pitcher and Player of the Week Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 16th through May 22nd:

Akron Aeros outfielder Tim Fedroff has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 16th-May 22nd. The 24-year old played in seven games last week for the Aeros and batted .583 (14-for-24) with two doubles, one triple, eight runs scored, five RBI, two stolen bases, four walks and a .750 slugging percentage. The 5'11", 220 lb. slugger had four multiple hit games during the week, including going 3-for-5 with one triple, one walk, three RBI and three runs scored in a 16-6 win over the Altoona Curve on Tuesday night at Canal Park. With his performance last week the Flagtown, New Jersey native extended his hitting streak to 16 games, which is the second longest streak in the Eastern League this season. He is hitting .492 with 13 RBI and 11 runs scored during the streak. Fedroff led all Eastern League players in batting average (.583), hits (14), runs scored (8), total bases (18), on-base percentage (.643) and OPS (1.393) last week. Tim, who has a league-best .376 batting average in 39 games for the Aeros this season, was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the seventh round of the 2008 draft after hitting .404 with 12 home runs, 78 runs scored and 71 RBI in 67 games during his sophomore season at the University of North Carolina.

Joel Carreno, a right-handed starting pitcher for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 16th-May 22nd. The 24-year old started two games for the Fisher Cats last week and had a record of 2-0 with 0.73 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched. Carreno made his first appearance of the week on Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium and allowed one run on two hits and five walks while striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings of work in a 7-1 win against Binghamton. In his second appearance of the week on Sunday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at New Britain the 6'0", 190 lb. hurler pitched six shutout innings in New Hampshire's 4-0 victory. He struck out seven batters and walked five while surrendering just one hit. The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (15) last week, was tied for first in wins (2) and ranked fifth in batting average against (.079). On the season he is currently ranked third in the league in strikeouts (53) and fifth in batting average against (.198). Joel, who has allowed two hits or less in each of his last four starts for the Fisher Cats, was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as a non-drafted free agent on October 11, 2004.
