Boulders Win Rain-Shortened Game, 2-1
July 3, 2023 - Frontier League (FL)
New York Boulders News Release
POMONA, NY - The New York Boulders' plans to celebrate America's birthday with a two-day celebration were interrupted by Mother Nature, as Monday's game against the Ottawa Titans was called in the eighth inning due to inclement weather.
New York, which led 2-1 when the game was called, are credited with a win since the game had finished five innings of play. Mother Nature could not, however, postpone the team's fireworks spectacular. Fans enjoyed the only fireworks show in Rockland County before the game was officially called.
Ottawa jumped on the board in the first inning on an RBI double by Jamey Smart, but it did not take long for New York to respond.
Tucker Nathans, who was one of three Boulders selected to the Frontier League All-Star Game earlier in the day, hit two-run opposite-field home run in the third inning to ignite the crowd and give the Boulders their only lead of the game.
Aaron Dona was credited with the win on the mound, tossing 3 2/3 innings of flawless relief pitching. The St. Thomas Aquinas College alum recorded six strikeouts against two hits and zero walks issued. Boulders starting pitcher Chris Cepeda allowed one unearned run in 3 1/3 innings.
Luke Chung, who made his debut with the Boulders on Monday, recorded the first hit of his professional career with his family on hand to see the milestone.
The Boulders, who have now won three consecutive games, will look to extend their win streak Tuesday against Ottawa at Clover Stadium. The second game of the series is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., but gates will be open at 4 p.m. for fans who wish to partake in the plethora of Fourth of July events planned at the stadium.
