New York Boulders News Release

(POMONA, NY) -The Boulders started off the first game with a bang, Jared McDonald sent a 1-1 pitch into the stands, and Joe Maloney followed one batter later with a solo shot of his own to make it a 2-0 game before the Jackals came up to bat.

Richard Salazar, who saw his undefeated season come to an end just last Wednesday, rebounded nicely. He pitched a complete game, giving up two runs- none earned - on four hits while striking out seven and walking just one.

Salazar ran in to trouble early before settling down to go the distance. In the bottom of the first he gave up two runs on three hits, including three straight singles. Leandro Castro and Jared Schlehuber both picked up an RBI. Those two runs, however, were unearned. With two outs, Mark Threlkeld advanced to first on an error by third baseman Ryan Fisher, and the Jackals capitalized.

Three innings later, the Boulders regained the lead. Marcus Nidiffer singled to lead off the inning, and was brought home by the next batter, Charlie Law, on an RBI double. Steve Nyisztor continued the rally, singling in Law to make it a 4-2 ballgame before a double play and a strikeout ended the inning.

Donnie Joseph relieved Jackals starter Anthony Claggett after just four innings of work. Claggett gave up four runs on six hits, walking one and striking out three. It was déjà vu in the 5th, as the Boulders lead off the inning again with three straight hits, this time two doubles and a single. They only managed one run on Joe Maloney's RBI double though, as Joseph recovered to collect two strikeouts and get Charlie Law to ground out to short to end the inning before any further damage.

The Boulders added some insurance in the 7th. Stephen Cardullo singled, and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Ryan Fisher then reached on an error, allowing Cardullo to score from second, making it a 6-2 game. Ryan Fisher made it all the way to third on the strength of two errors, one by the second baseman and the other by the pitcher. He would come home on a single by Marcus Nidiffer to make it 7-2, and that is how the score would remain.

In game two the Boulders seemed to pick up where they left off, loading the bases against Jackals starter John Walter before he could record an out. He walked McDonald and Maloney, Cardullo reached on an error and Ryan Fisher singled in a run. Marcus Nidiffer grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, but Cardullo was able to score on the play to make it a 2-0 game.

Nathaniel Roe escaped a bases loaded situation in the 2nd, allowing just one run on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Gomez to score Leandro Castro.

Roe would run into further trouble in the 4th when Leandro Castro and Jared Schlehuber singled back-to-back to start off the inning. Schlehuber would be advanced twice, to third and across the plate on two groundouts to even the game 2-2.

Nathaniel Roe's night would be ended after one out in the 5th when he allowed the go-ahead run. After retiring Mark Threlkeld on a strikeout, Leandro Castro advanced on a single and then, after swiping second, he was driven home on a single by Schlehuber. Chad Robinson came in to relieve Roe at this point, with Roe's final line being 5.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO.

That score, 3-2, would hold up as the Jackals would hold on for a win despite Jackals reliever Hector Nelo loading the bases in the top of the 7th. Charlie Law doubled, Junior Arrojo was hit by a pitch, and Jared McDonald walked. With two outs and the bases loaded Stephen Cardullo flied out to center field to end the threat. Hector Nelo recorded the save to secure the win for the Jackals and a split of the doubleheader.
