Sussex County Miners News Release
AUGUSTA, NJ - The Sussex County Miners rode a pair of four-run innings to a victory over the Garden State Grays on Tuesday night at Skylands Stadium. Sussex County (14-24) struck for its first outburst in the third and then scored four more in the fifth inning to beat Garden State (2-7), 8-3.
The Miners trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the third, but powered back on the strength of three extra-base hits and a key Grays error. After Cory Morales and Rey Otero began the inning with back-to-back singles, Carlos Hughes put down a sacrifice bunt. Grays starting pitcher Will Scott threw the ball away at first and both runners scored to cut the Grays' lead to 3-2.
Hughes was picked off of second base for the first out, but the Miners still rallied. Jon Dziomba drove a triple into the right-centerfield gap and Ryan Pineda followed with a game- tying double down the left field line. Two batters later, Reggie Abercrombie gave the Miners a 4-3 lead with an RBI double to left.
Sussex County's offense produced another big inning in the fifth. Devin Thaut ripped a two- run double and later scored when Morales hit a chopper to third that bounced over the head of Omar Artsen. The Miners led 7-3 after Morales' ground ball found left field, but Sussex County would add one more run thanks to aggressive baserunning.
The Miners had Otero on first base and Morales on third with two outs in the inning when Otero took off for second base. Grays catcher Yefry Castillo pump-faked to second base and threw to third. When Castillo threw to third, Morales broke for home and scored without a play. Morales' steal of home gave Sussex County an 8-3 lead. Â
Josh Wood earned the win for the Miners with five strong innings of work. Wood (3-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He also worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the fourth with a double play. Wood struck out five and walked three in the winning effort.
Will Scott took the loss for Garden State. The right-hander surrendered four runs (three earned) over four innings. Scott (0-2) gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three.
Three different Miners logged multi-hit games in Tuesday's win, including Abercrombie, who hit his fourth double in the last two games. Morales and Otero also picked up two hits each.
The Miners have split the first two games of their series with the Grays and will face Garden State again on Wednesday night. First pitch at Skylands Stadium will be at 7:05 PM.
