Ottawa Champions News Release
Ottawa, ON - If Drew Cisco was feeling rusty after not having pitched since June 21st he certainly didn't show it on Tuesday night.
Making his first start since coming off the disabled list, the righthander allowed only a run over five innings as the Ottawa Champions edged the St. Paul Saints 2-1.
It was his first win since May 30th against the Sussex County Miners.
"I thought that was the best he's thrown, maybe all season," said Champions manager Hal Lanier. "He had good velocity, kept his breaking balls down, and was able to get ahead in the count."
Drew Gay took the loss for St. Paul, allowing two runs over six innings while striking out four and walking four.
Ian Gac gave St. Paul an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, when he ripped an RBI single to score Willie Agro who had also reached on a single.
Ottawa got that back in the second though when Chris Winder walked, Daniel Bick singled him to second, and Albert Cartwright drove Winder home with a double.
Ottawa then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth but had a chance for more.
With two runners on and two out, Alex Nunez ripped a base hit that scored Mike Schwartz from third, but Bryce Massanari was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second, ending the inning.
"This win really helps us after what happened last night," said Lanier, referring to the Champions' 14-5 loss. "We've been playing solid baseball lately and these guys showed a lot of character coming back tonight."
Ottawa got some strong performances out of its bullpen as well, with rookie Laetten Galbraith throwing two scoreless innings, Nick Purdy striking out the side in the eighth, and Alan DeRatt nailing it down in the ninth for his 10th save of the season.
The Saints came into the game leading the American Association by a country mile, with a 34-9 record and a 15-game lead over the Sioux Falls Canaries in the North Division.
The Champions turn to their ace LHP Andrew Werner (5-3, 3.76 ERA) tomorrow as they look to guarantee a split against the Saints. He'll be opposed by St. Paul LHP Kramer Sneed (7-1, 2.19 ERA).
