Ottawa Champions News Release

OTTAWA - Dakota Freese struck out eight batters in his first start with the Ottawa Champions in a 5-3 victory over the Rockland Boulders on Thursday.

Freese went seven strong and allowed just two earned runs on two hits but walked five. Brian Portelli went 1-for-3 at the plate and crushed his sixth homer of the year over the wall in left-center.

Champions manager Sébastien Boucher was satisfied with his team's effort.

"The guys took advantage of what they were given," said Boucher. "We weren't very offensive today but we were able to capitalize on their mistakes."

The Boulders got on the board first when Grant Heyman grounded out to first with runners on second and third, allowing Richie Fecteau to score. Portelli's homer got the run back in the next half-inning.

Ottawa put up another three runs in the bottom of the eighth and, despite a home run from Heyman in the top of the ninth, put the game out of reach for Rockland.

Ottawa welcomes the Québec Capitales to RCGT Park tomorrow for the first game of a four-game series, the last of the Champions' season.
