New York Boulders News Release
(POMONA, NY) - The Rockland Boulders were shut out for the first time this season in a late 1-0 loss against the American Association's Kansas City T-Bones Monday night at Provident Bank Park. The Boulders (23-12) remain at the top of the Can-Am, while the T-Bones (16-16) hold the third place spot in the American Association's Central Division.
Stifling pitching defined the contest from start to finish, as neither Rockland starter Alex Gouin nor Kansas City starter Blake Holovach surrendered a run throughout each of their respective seven-inning starts. The outing was Gouin's second straight scoreless start.
Neither team reached third base until the sixth inning when Rockland's Steve Nyisztor took first on a hit-by-pitch before reaching third on a two-out Joe Maloney single. The Boulders couldn't cash in with the corners loaded, however, as Marcus Nidiffer flew out to the center field warning track on the next at bat.
The pitching duel continued into the eighth inning despite both teams changing pitchers. Fray Martinez came in for Rockland and retired three straight batters, while Kansas City's Fernando Hernandez sent the Boulders down in order.
The T-Bones finally broke the tie in the ninth inning when Adam Bailey singled off of Rockland reliever Shawn Gilblair to score Jake Blackwood and take a 1-0 lead. Gilblair has only surrendered two runs through 12 relief appearances in 2015.
Rockland threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth when Maloney led off the inning with a single and eventually reached third on back-to-back sacrifices. However, the Boulders again failed to cash in as Hernandez struck out Charlie Law for the game's last out.
Hernandez (1-2) picked up the win in two scoreless innings of relief, while Gilblair (1-1) took his first loss of the season after giving up the game's only run.
The Boulders continue their interleague series against the T-Bones on Tuesday, June 30 at 7 p.m. at Provident Bank Park.
