Boomers Fall in Finale at Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, made a ninth inning rally but fell 4-3 to the Traverse City Beach Bums in the series finale on Sunday.

Schaumburg scored twice in the ninth against Traverse City closer Andrew Brockett to tie the game. Brockett had not allowed a run all season. Jordan Dean opened the rally with a single and Craig Massey followed with a walk. singled, but Dean was thrown out at the plate. With two outs, Alexi Colon singled home two to even the score at 3-3. Schaumburg Joel Hutter led 1-0 in the contest, scoring in the first on a single from Hutter. Traverse City was able to respond, winning the game and series with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth.

Peter Gehle made his Schaumburg debut on the mound, allowing three runs in four innings. Evan Boyd tossed three blank frames and Kamakani Usui spun the eighth. Hideyoshi Otake suffered the loss. The Boomers managed just five hits entering the ninth but finished with nine in the game. Dean and Hutter tallied two each.

Schaumburg (16-23) returns home to begin a six-game stint on Tuesday night against the Frontier Greys at 6:30 p.m. RHP Brett Mabry (2-2, 3.92) starts for the Boomers.
