Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

WUERFEL PARK Brandon Jacobs singled into center field, plating Jay Austin from third base to give the Traverse City Beach Bums the 4-3 walk-off win over the Schaumburg Boomers on Sunday evening.

Schaumburg had tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth on Alexi Colon's two-out, two-run single to centerfield. However, in the home half of the ninth the Beach Bums wouldn't be denied their first walk-off win of the season.

Facing Schaumburg reliever Hideyoshi Otake, Austin singled then moved to second on Graham Ramos' sac bunt. Following a balk by Otake to put Austin at third both Jose Vargas and Yazy Arbelo were intentionally walked to load the bases.

That brought up Jacobs who, with the infield playing in, singled through the middle to score Austin and give the Beach Bums the win.

Austin finished the game with two hits, extending his hit streak to 17 games. Vargas also had two hits and has 373 in his Beach Bums' career, tied with former teammate Chase Burch for the most in club history.

Michael Shreves pitched the first seven innings and had been in line for the win. Making his third start, he lasted seven innings yielding one run on five hits. The win goes to Andrew Brockett, who pitched the ninth, allowing the first two runs against him in 16 relief appearances this season.

Schaumburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a ground rule double by Jordan Dean and RBI single from Joel Hutter. The Beach Bums rallied back in the second inning. Greg Harisis singled, went to third on a Jake Rhodes single and scored on Sam Bumpers bunt single to even the score 1-1.

In the third inning, Vargas led off with the double and later scored on an Arbelo ground out to give the Beach Bums the 2-1 lead.

Then in the fourth, Ramos came through with a two-out RBI single scoring Bumpers and the Beach Bums were up 3-1.

It stayed that way until the ninth. Schaumburg started the rally with a Dean single and Craig Massey walked. Hutter then singled to right field, but Reggie Lawson gunned down Dean trying to score at the plate for the first out.

Mike Schulze grounded out to third for the second out, but runners advanced to second and third. Down to their last out, Colon tied the game with a clean single to center.

The inning would end one batter later, when Colon was thrown out at third base by Lawson in right field on a Kyle Ruchim single.
