Washington Wild Things News Release

MARION, IL - The Washington Wild Things offense was on display in the final game of a three game series against the Southern Illinois Miners Sunday night, winning 10-1.

In a night where every Washington hitter reached base, the offense looked unstoppable. Center fielder Danny Poma started off the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning. The Wild Things right fielder Scott Kalamar followed Poma's two RBI swing with one of his own that scored Poma and left fielder C.J. Beatty.

Washington went on to add three more runs in the third and fourth innings thanks to efforts from Beatty, second baseman Matt Ford, and first baseman Sam Mende. The final three runs came from Ford and Mende who each hit a home run to make a 10-0 lead.

While offense was the headline of the night, starting pitcher Matt Sergey nearly stole the show. His line was as good as it gets, earning a win with seven scoreless innings, ten strikeouts and only six hits. Relievers Joe Iorio and Matt Purnell each pitched an inning to shut down the Miners offense.

The Miners scored one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it was not enough to overcome the Wild Things offensive power. The final score of the game was 10-1.

The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park on Tuesday, June 30th to play a three game series against the Lake Erie Crushers. Catch all of the action on WJPA 95.3 FM or on www.msasports.net with Randy Gore and/or follow live in-game tweets on Twitter (handle @washwildthings).
